《Where’s Halmoni?》

우리말로 번역된 한글 그림책도 있더라고요.

한글 그림책 제목은 《사라진 할머니》입니다.

전래동화 같으면서도 판타지적인 요소와 유머가 함께 있는 그런 책이었습니다.

영어 원서 책 사이트에서 항상 상위랭크 되어있어서 언젠가는 읽어봐야지 했었는데요.
드디어 보게 됐네요.

1. 줄거리

 

 

준과 누나가 할머니 댁에 놀러 왔습니다.

부엌에서 팥죽 냄새는 나지만 할머니는 보이지 않고, 호랑이 발자국만 있습니다.

발자국을 따라가다가 장지문을 발견하게 되는데요.

장지문을 열고 들어가 보니 전래동화의 토끼, 도깨비, 호랑이가 사는 새로운 세상이 펼쳐집니다.

여기서 할머니를 찾을 수 있을까요?

중간에 이상한 나라의 앨리스처럼 토끼를 만나기도 하고요.

도깨비를 만나기도 합니다.

드디어 호랑이도 만나게 됩니다.

모험을 떠나면서 할머니를 찾는 과정이 책에 몰입하게 만듭니다.

 

또 중간중간 옛날이야기 인물들이 쓰는 한국말이 반갑게 느껴집니다.

그래서 아이들이 더 친숙하게 느껴지는 원서 그림책인 거 같습니다.

 

Where's Halmoni?

Beautifully illustrated and told by debut author Julie Kim, this own voices picture book in graphic-novel style follows a young Korean girl and boy whose search for their missing grandmother leads them into a world inspired by Korean folklore, complete with mischievous goblins (dokkebi), a greedy tiger, a clever rabbit, and a wily fox. Two young children pay a visit to Halmoni (grandmother in Korean), only to discover she's not home. As they search for her, noticing animal tracks covering the floor, they discover a window, slightly ajar, new to their grandmother's home. Their curiosity gets the best of them, and they crawl through and discover an unfamiliar fantastical world, and their adventure begins. As they continue to search for their grandmother and solve the mystery of the tracks, they go deeper into a world of Korean folklore, meeting a number of characters who speak in Korean along the way, and learn more about their cultural heritage. This beautifully illustrated graphic picture book is filled with a number of Easter eggs for readers of all ages to discover, and is inspired by the Korean folktales that author and illustrator Julie Kim heard while growing up. Translations to Korean text in the story and more about the folktale-inspired characters are included at the end.
